Simultaneously sophisticated and silly; a moose-themed identity for a custom software consultancy

Project Overview

I wasn't sure I liked the name "oos." Wouldn't people mispronounce it "ooze?" That's when I had an idea...

As Creative Director, I would wield the incredible psychological power of design and make the logo a subliminal pronunciation aid. Then the only question became whether we wanted our new software startup to be associated with a certain pesky waterfowl, or...a more dignified creature of noble stature. The choice of a mascot was clear, and our tagline quickly became "oos; you know, rhymes with moose."

Project Approach

With the "oos moose" as our emblem, the brand gradually expanded with illustrative assets, iconography, and even a physical set design.

We began to envision a set where we could produce video marketing content and make it seem like we were in a hip techno-lodge (rather than our bland gray office space). I sketched a plan for an 8' x 10' wall, but it would need to be portable in case we moved offices. I worked with a contractor to plan a wall that would be stabilized by legs on casters and foldable horizontally on hinges, with the front panel being removable. The adjacent wall would have hanging backdrops that could be swapped out for different effects or left open to display a whiteboard for webinars.

In a relatively small space, this setup afforded us just enough room for two-person interviews seated across a table.

For me, the experience of designing something is essentially the same whether the end product is physical or digital. It requires close collaboration with experts who know how to take the vision I've thought up and mocked up and actually build the thing. I find this sort of collaboration incredibly energizing, as there's nothing more satisfying for a designer than seeing a vision come to life. (Especially moose-related visions.)
