Halieus Discipleship Web App

A first-of-its kind digital product for managing one-on-one mentoring relationships and interactive content.

Project Overview

A new category of app—structured around personal growth best practices, flexible enough for any type of step-based program.

Through the software consultancy oos, we provided end-to-end product team services around the concept that became Halieus from initial business needs analysis to delivery of a fully-functional MVP. The client continues to engage our services as they bring the product to market. Some highlights of my involvement include:

  • Product ideation
  • Facilitating an in-person focus group with 10+ leaders in the field of Christian discipleship
  • User journey mapping
  • Entity relationship diagramming in collaboration with engineering
  • Wireframing
  • High-fidelity prototyping
  • Designing promotional materials
  • Product site design and copywriting
  • Regularly communicating design decisions to stakeholders
  • Presenting MVP in-person to client's Board of Directors

Project Approach

A robustly scaleable design system enables Halieus to adapt quickly while maintaining consistent UI patterns.

We knew from the outset that a complex and evolving web app like Halieus would depend on a strong and well-organized design system. The library of components and variables I created in Figma aligns as closely as possible with actual React components—even down to their properties and naming conventions. This approach has brought engineering closer to design, even allowing engineers to lay out certain new pages and flows without the need for new prototyping.

For an app built around tracking multiple users' journeys through various programs, journey mapping is a must.

The main element of complexity in designing Halieus is the need for two different types of users to view the same content in different ways. Every screen requires both a "leader view" and an "apprentice view." Leader users create and curate content, tracking the progress of multiple apprentices through a tailored program. Apprentice users interact with that content, submitting personal reflection questions and taking notes to discuss at the next session with their leader.

Mapping out the app's fundamental process has been a powerful means of communicating design to stakeholders.

The solution simplifies this inherent complexity with elements of gamification, thoughtful use of color, UI patterns that reference learning management systems, and an overall clean aesthetic.

I'm excited to share more as Halieus continues to develop!
